1. What is hair toner used for?
Hair toner is used to adjust the tone of pre-lightened or permanent coloured hair commonly to neutralise yellow or orange undertones, enhance cool or warm shades, or achieve pastel finishes.
2. Is toner only for blonde hair?
No. While blonde toner is popular for removing brassiness, hair toners are also used on brunettes, silvers, and fashion colours to refine tone and create depth or contrast.
3. Do I need to use a developer with toner?
Yes. Most professional hair toners require mixing with a low-volume developer (typically 1.5% or 3%) to activate the formula and help deposit the tone evenly.
4. How long does hair toner last?
Toner typically lasts between 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the hair’s condition, aftercare routine, and how often it’s washed. Using a colour-safe shampoo can help extend the results.
5. Will toner damage hair?
Toners are generally gentler than permanent dyes and help restore balance after bleaching. Many formulas are ammonia-free and contain conditioning ingredients.
6. What’s the difference between a toner and a dye?
Toners are used for fine-tuning colour and don’t drastically change the hair’s shade like permanent hair dyes. They’re ideal for correcting unwanted tones and adding subtle colour.
7. Can I use toner without bleaching the hair first?
Toner works best on lightened hair. We recommend using bleach and lighteners first to lift the hair to the required level before applying toner. If the hair hasn’t been bleached, a semi-permanent hair colour product may be a better option for adding tone or gloss.
