How Do I Know Which Needle Holder I Need for My Sterex Machine?

One of the most common questions we hear from electrolysis professionals is:
"Which Sterex needle holder do I need?"
The good news is that choosing the right one is actually very straightforward. You only need to answer two simple questions, and you'll quickly know exactly which needle holder is compatible with your machine.
Step 1: What Type of Connector Does Your Machine Have?
The first thing to identify is the connector on your machine.
There are two types used on Sterex electrolysis machines:
Banana Connector
The banana connector is a long, narrow metal pin that simply pushes into the socket on your machine. It has been used on many Sterex machines over the years and is easy to recognise by its slim metal connection.

BNC Connector
The BNC connector has a round metal fitting that pushes on and twists to lock into place. It provides a secure connection and is commonly found on newer machines.
If you're unsure which you have, simply look at the end of your current needle holder or the socket on your machine. The connector type is usually obvious once you know what you're looking for.

Step 2: Do You Use a Footswitch?
Next, think about how you activate your treatment current.
You Use a Foot Pedal
If you activate the current using a footswitch or foot pedal, you'll need a non-switched needle holder.
Because your foot pedal controls the treatment current, there's no need for a switch on the handpiece itself. This keeps the handle simple and comfortable to hold.
You Press a Switch on the Needle Holder
If you prefer to activate the current using your hand while treating, choose a switched needle holder.
These feature a convenient switch positioned where your finger naturally rests, allowing you to control the treatment without using a foot pedal.
Your Four Options:
Once you've answered those two questions, your choice becomes easy.
BNC Switched Needle Holder
-
Round BNC connector
-
Finger-operated switch on the handpiece
-
Ideal if you don't use a foot pedal

BNC Non-Switched Needle Holder
-
Round BNC connector
-
No switch on the handle
-
Designed for use with a foot pedal

Banana Switched Needle Holder
-
Long metal banana connector
-
Finger-operated switch
-
Perfect if you prefer hand activation

Banana Non-Switched Needle Holder
-
Long metal banana connector
-
No switch fitted
-
Designed for use with a foot pedal

Can I Use Either Type?
Unfortunately not.
The connector must match your Sterex machine exactly. A banana connector will not fit a BNC socket, and a BNC connector cannot be used with a banana connection.
Likewise, while a switched holder can sometimes still be used with certain machine setups, choosing the correct switched or non-switched version gives the most comfortable and efficient treatment experience.

Why Does the Right Needle Holder Matter?
Your needle holder is one of the most frequently handled parts of your electrolysis machine. Using the correct version ensures:
-
A secure electrical connection.
-
Comfortable treatment sessions.
-
Reliable delivery of treatment current.
-
Less hand fatigue during longer appointments.
-
Consistent, professional results.
It's also worth inspecting your needle holder regularly. If the connector becomes loose, the switch feels unreliable, or the needle no longer grips securely, it may be time to replace it. A worn needle holder can affect both treatment comfort and performance.
Still Not Sure?
If you're unsure which connector your Sterex machine has, don't worry.
Simply take a photograph of:
-
the connection on your machine, or
-
your existing needle holder,
and send it to our team. We'll be happy to identify the correct needle holder for you before you order.
Choosing the right Sterex needle holder doesn't have to be confusing.
By identifying your connector type and how you activate the treatment current, you'll have the correct handpiece in minutes and be ready to continue delivering safe, comfortable and effective electrolysis treatments with confidence.
